Reflecting on Our Photo Project:

   Reflecting on Our Photo Project:

In shooting and planning our photo project, we were based roughly off the prompt, "You've committed a serious offense on campus, and are terrified to suffer the consequences." It's through this prompt where my group and I's immediate focus was on establishing the relationship between characters through our angling of the camera. This was where the high-angle shot was able to play a huge role in conveying this. We wanted a shot that made the offender look vulnerable, driving home the idea that they’re “terrified to suffer the consequences.” Our actor was Josiah and we had him reflect this prompted fear through his clothes and body language, conveying the delinquent as closed-off and demonstrating self-soothing techniques typical of someone who is about to face a serious consequence. We had him cast in shadow, which we did in order to convey the moral differences between our two characters through the use of lighting. Unfortunately, because of the location of our natural lighting source, the scene had more depth than we wanted, we figured that a more claustrophobic effect would need to be used to create this tone of dread, but simply weren’t able to do that whilst still achieving the lighting effect we wanted. I was cast as the role of the teacher or administrator, standing over Josiah at an angle that omitted my head, creating this authoritative effect like the adults in classic cartoons like Charlie Brown. Overall, the project taught us a lot about how sacrifices need to be made in capturing a theme and developed our skills regarding framing and understanding how to convey character relationships and hierarchy through actor positioning.
